Cytological and Histological Studies on the Male Sterility of Potato , Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Irish Cobbler

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to study the cytological and histological mechanism of male sterility of potato, Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Irish Cobbler. The results were as follow:
1. Chromosome behavior in meiosis of pollen mother cell was rather regular but dyad formation was prominent. The dyad formation was mainly caused by pc 1, pc 2, and ps was also found in some cells. But the dyad formation was not thought to affect the pollen failure.
2. Degeneration of tapetal tissue was slower than in Shimabara. The incomplete development of inner anther lobe would be caused by the slow degeneration of tapetal tissue. The inhibited nutrition supply by the remained tapetal tissue was also assumed to cause empty microspores.
